Experimental Illustration Summer 2025

Week 1: DIY Portfolio

Creating our own portfolio by making abstract marks with ink on paper, then assembling and binding the paper into a useable portfolio. Then imagining pictures and shapes in the ink marks and drawing them.

Ink, paper, binding string, red fineliner.

Week 2: Silhouette

Stop motion animation with paper silhouette puppet focusing on capturing emotion and movement through simple shapes and silhouette.

Traditional and digital media, paper, tape.

Week 4: Alien Plants

Series of 3 plants each representing a season and bearing fruit of the corresponding season. Named Primavera Margarita (The Jewel of Spring), Aestas Astermelo (Flowering Melon), and Munificentia Autumnalis (Ceres’s Messis).

Drawn digitally.

Week 5: Botanical Gardens and Mini Herbarium

Visiting the Botanischer Garten in Berlin and drawing plants from observation. Using our plant studies- we then created our own matchbox herbarium with the theme of plants in mind.

Coloured pencil, gouache paint, handmade paper matchbox, and various natural items.

Week 6: Deutches Tecknikmuseum.

Various sketches of an oktant, tellurium, ship, and a plane propeller motor.

Brown fineliner and yellow Ecoline brush marker.

Week 7: Machine

Combining machine parts to create an original machine with a purpose. Exploring the concepts of animal-like machines.

Red pencil, red fineliner, brown fineliner, yellow Ecoline brush marker.

Week 8: Street View

Adding our own illustration to an already existing place. We searched for images via Google Maps, then printed the images and drew on top of them.

Gouache painting on a printed photograph.

Week 9: Surreal Landscape

Using collage techniques to create a surreal landscape. Featuring a oversized hybrid fox family surrounded by large mushrooms.

Mixed media, paper, glue, and coffee.

Weeks 10 and 11: Tetra Pack Carving

Recycling old cartons and carving into the tetra pack material inside creates an interesting method of intaglio printing. The theme was bestiary so the design features a hare and fox.

Tetra-pack and printing ink.

Week 14: Gum Hearts and Black Hands

Printing workshop where we reused old bicycle tires to cut stamps and print on fabric and paper.

Bicycle tires, wood blocks, printing ink.

Final Project: Our World

Create a series of three motifs and replicate them on three different size formats; A2, postcard, and matchbox. I continued exploring my forest-based world full of strange animals, creatures, and the vast unknown of the woods.

A2: mixed media, gouache, pencils, and chalk pastels. Postcard: brown fineliner and brown water-soluble pencil. Matchbox: linocut and brown printing ink.
